SC calls FIRs against Zubair as Vicious Cycle, asks U.P police not to take action till Wednesday

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Uttar Pradesh Police to not take any precipitative action against Alt News Co-Founder Mohammed Zubair in connection with 5 FIRs – two in Hathras, and one each in Lakhimpur Kheri, Muzaffarnagar and Ghaziabad till the next hearing on Wednesday, 20th July.

A bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and A.S. Bopanna issued notice on the plea filed by Zubair seeking to quash the FIRs registered against him by the UP Police. During the hearing, Justice Chandrachud orally remarked, “Contents of all FIRs seem to be similar. What seems to be happening is, as he gets bail in one case, he is remanded in another. This vicious cycle is continuing”.

Zubair’s plea was taken up after advocate Vrinda Grover sought an urgent hearing on the matter but the Justice Chandrachud said that the case is not listed on board today. Later, the judges decided to grant interim relief to Zubair for two days. Accordingly, the bench directed for listing the interim bail on Wednesday.

On July 12, the Supreme Court extended the interim bail it granted to Zubair in the case registered against him at Sitapur and listed the matter for final disposal on September 7. (With IANS inputs)
