New Delhi: The standing committee on Home Affairs under the chairmanship of Congress Deputy leader of the Rajyasabha has decided to deliberate on the controversial National Register of Citizens process this month . This time the Parliamentary panel comprises of 31 members from both the Houses, but no MPs from the state of Assam has been included in the committee.
Out of 31 MPs, five are from West Bengal, belonging to the Trinamul Congress and leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury who are opposing the NRC process . Only BJP state president of West Bengal Dilip Ghosh is member of the committee . He has declared that NRC will be undertaken in the state very soon.
Sources indicated that they would summon all the stake holders of NRC in the committee to get a first hand knowledge about the latest situation after the announcement of the final list of citizens of Assam where 19 lacs people are left out from the list, leaving them with the fear about their existence in the state.
Meanwhile, the coordinator of NRC Prateek Hajela has expressed his intention to exclude himself from the process of finalization of NRC list, and Supreme court has ghiven him permission to move out from then Assam to his parent cadre Madhyapradesh. But till date, he has not been transferred to his parent state and no new coordinator has been appointed so far.
It islearnt that many government officials were approached and most of them had shown reluctance to join as coordinator of the NRC. It was told that all the 19 lakh people who were excluded in the finalt of NRC would be given chance to apply once again to prove their credentials as citizen of the state.
NRC was supposed to send letter to all those people excluded from the list explaining the reason for not being included. But till date no letter has been issued and the fate of all those excluded people is in limbo.
The ruling BJP party has already rejected thew NRC list, saying that “genuine citizens” are left out. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonwal has givenj assurance to some Bengali organistaions that Asaam government would extend all legal help to all those people whor are left out from the list. So far, no initiative is taken in this regard. In this backdrop the meeting of the Stading Committee would be a stormy affairs. RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat has reiterated on Saturday that NRC should be implemented all over the country soon. IANS
