New Parliament House to be ready for session from 2022: Om Birla

Ottawa: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said here the new Parliament House will be ready in 2022, when India will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Independence.

Mr Birla made the announcement addressing the 25th conference of the Presiding Officers and the Chairman of Parliaments of Commonwealth on Wednesday.

When India will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Independence, the Parliament sessions will be held in the new House, he said.

He said that for the work on the new House, all stakeholders had been consulted, adding that with growing number of law makers, the expansion of Parliament House had become necessary to accommodate the rising needs in law making.

The Speaker also said that the work on reconstruction of Central Vista, from Rashtrapati Bhawan to India Gate, had started. The new Parliament House and Central Vista will constructed in a manner that it will fulfill the needs of the next 250 years.

”The Parliament House constructed in 1927 has completed 92 glorious years. But now with the new mandate our responsibilities have increased, so a new Parliament House is needed to provide ample space and facilities to the MPs and officials for their work,” he said.

The requirements of the 21rst century had led several countries across the world to reconstruct their Parliament Houses, and moreover, the architecture of the Parliament House symbolised the aspirations of a country and its people.

Speaking on the subject of parliamentary activities, transparency and accountability, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh said Parliament’s democracy required that Parliament mainatined its dialogue with the people, and that was why it was necessary to convey the information of the works of Parliament to the public.

He asserted that openness, transparency and accountability were the cornerstones of a successful parliamentary democracy, and all the three were inter-related and mutually reinforced each other.
