Lokayat terms draft EIA rules anti-environment, launches online campaign

June 9, 2020
Pune: Environment aactivists’ group Lokayat has launched an online campaign again against the draft EIA rules, saying that if enforced new EIA laws would harm evironment and would only serve corporate interest.

”Corporate interests are controlling this country. Taking advantage of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, they want all legal limitations against ruthless profiteering removed. Labour laws were the first target, now it’s the turn of environmental protection laws. This is the true aim of the Environmental Impact Assessment 2020,” Neeraj Jain of Lokayat said in a statement here.

The EIA is a study, practiced in more than 100 countries, to predict the effect of a proposed activity or project on the environment before the start of that project.A new draft has been proposed to the public on March 12 by MoEFCC.

Lokayat says the draft violates the principle of “polluter pays”, and it is not environment friendly, but pro corporate. MoreoverpPost-facto Environmental Clearance (EC) is legalized by the government, and the draft exempts many industries from the public hearing process

This draft is open for public comments till June 30, 2020. The online campaign against it is named
#WithdrawDraftEIA2020.

”This draft if not withdrawn will severely endanger the environment. We are seeking to reach out to the people through social media regarding this draft to make them aware of its dangers. We must raise a voice against this draft! ,” the activists’ group said.
