Jamia improves its position in Times Higher Education World University Rankings

Sep 12, 2019

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has improved its position in Times Higher Education(THE) World University Rankings 2020.

The university is now among the top 601-800 universities of the world improving its position from 801-1000 last year. After the first 200 ranks, the rankings put institutes into rank groups rather than individual ranks.

The London-based Times Higher Education(THE) World University Rankings 2020 has assessed about 1,400 universities spread over 92 countries.

JMI Vice-Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar expressed her happiness over the consistent improvement in the performance of the university in national and international rankings.

Prof. Akhtar said that the performance reflects JMI’s growing international presence and outreach besides its impetus on high quality research, publications and teaching. She hoped that the university will improve its performance that would increase its ranking further.

THE has considered five parameters: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook for assessing the performance of the universities.

JMI has improved its score significantly because of increase in paper citations, an important element of the ranking that is also an indicator of quality research in the university.

It is worth mentioning that JMI retained its position in the coveted Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking at 751-800 with its research intensity been described as ‘very high”. The ranking was released last June.

JMI was ranked at 12th position in the country by MHRD’s National Institutional Ranking Framework(NIRF-2019), retaining its earlier position.

The university also improved its ranking in the Times Higher Education(THE) Asia University Rankings-2019 and Moscow -based Round University Rankings(RUR)2019.

Outlook-ICARE India University Rankings 2019 has placed the university at 3rd position among the top 25 Central Universities and at 17th rank among top 100 universities in India last July.
