EU moves resolutions against India over CAA, Kashmir; India says internal matter

Jan 26, 2020

New Delhi: A group of EU lawmakers has moved a resolution against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act which it termed as highly discriminatory, calling upon the Indian government to engage with those agitating against the law and consider their demands to repeal it.

The resolution expresses apprehension that the legislation might be used with the proposed National Register of Citizens to “render many Muslim citizens stateless”. Accusing India of violating the internationally recognised principles, it urged the governments to ensure that people belonging to minority groups, including religious minorities, may exercise their human rights without discrimination and in full equality before the law, reports in the media said.

The EU lawmakers said the Indian Government should demonstrate their expressed commitment to fully guaranteeing the protection of refugees and migrants, irrespective of their religion”.

The draft resolution is expected to be debated on January 29 and a vote is likely on January 30.

Along with the Citizenship Amendment Act, the EU resolutions have also taken up the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir, adds IANS

Out of 751 members of the EU Parliament, 626 have moved six resolutions on both the issues. The diplomatic offensive by the EU against India comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brussels for the India-EU summit in March.

Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs here said the government took note of the EU move immediately and will withstand the EU pressure by reminding its members that the CAA is “an internal matter” of India.
