Bengal enhances upper age limit for govt recruitment by five years​

Kolkata: As promised in the Bharatiya Janata Party pre-election Sankalp Patra, the new West Bengal government led by the ninth Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, has enhanced the upper age limit for recruitment to state government posts by five years.​

According to a press statement issued by the state government on Monday, the state Cabinet took the decision, and the state Finance Department has formally notified the revised age limits, which came into effect from May 11, 2026.​

The revised limits shall apply to recruitments through the Public Service Commission, West Bengal.​

“The maximum age shall now be 41 years for Group ‘A’ posts, 44 years for Group ‘B’ posts, and 45 years for Group ‘C’ and Group ‘D’ posts. In cases where the existing prescribed upper age limit for any post is already higher, such a higher limit shall continue to apply,” the press statement read.​

It is learnt that the enhancement of the upper age limit will also apply to recruitments made through other channels, such as those by state statutory bodies, state government undertakings, and local authorities covered under the West Bengal Regulation of Recruitment in State Statutory Bodies, Government Companies and Local Authorities Act, 1999.​

In such cases, the age limit has been fixed uniformly at 45 years.​

According to the press statement, the first recruitment process to benefit from this decision will be the ongoing selection for the post of assistant professor in state-aided degree colleges, as per a recent advertisement issued by the West Bengal College Service Commission.​

“As the College Service Commission is a state statutory body, the revised upper age limit of 45 years shall apply to this recruitment, in place of the earlier limit of 40 years, reckoned as on January 1, 2026,” the statement read.​

It also said that the existing relaxations in age available to candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and differently-abled persons shall continue to apply in accordance with prevailing rules.​
