Feb 23, 2020

New Delhi: A number of scholars and intellectuals hailing from different faiths on Saturday gathered here under the banner of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind rejected the National People’s Register(NPR), saying its was gross violation of Article 14 of the Constitution.

A “Delhi Declaration” adopted after a 4-hour brain-storming session urged all the state Governments to immediately suspend the NPR process, and also appealed to all the Law and order enforcing agencies to respect the constitutional rights of the people of India to protest peacefully.

The Resolution passed on Saturday condemned the ”targeted killings of peaceful demonstrators” by police firing in various states specially Uttar Pradesh.

The scholars and religious leaders condemned the indiscriminate arrest of people under sedition and similar draconian laws and demanded their immediate and unconditional release and withdrawal of all the charges against them.

They demand adequate compensation for physical and material damages and psychological distress caused to people and institutional properties across the country.

”The state has become a laboratory of state repression on peaceful dissent. We condemn the police firing, damage to property, the arrest of innocent people and the unprecedented levying of penalties on civilian protesters.

”We salute the multi religious peaceful protest by youth, students and women in many Shaheen Bagh/s across the country,” the Delhi Declaration said.
