Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Saturday nominated retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Prasar Bharati, Jawhar Sircar as its candidated for bypoll to the Rajya Sabha.
The bypoll for the upper house from West Bengal is scheduled on August 9. The seat was vacated by Dinesh Trivedi earlier this year.
Sircar, who is based in Kolkata, has been strongly vocal against the BJP for a long time, and his selection by Mamata Banerjee for the House is seen as part of strengthening the Trinamool Congress’s resistance against the ruling party at the Centre in Parliament.
Sircar also has a distinguished career in public administration. He was secretary of the Ministry of Culture from November 2008 to February 2012, the longest for any Secretary, and he also headed the ministry of informaion and broadcasting for brief period. Besides, he served as CEO of India’s public broadcaster, (2012-2016).
“Mr Sircar spent nearly 42 years in public service and was also the former CEO of Prasar Bharati. His invaluable contribution to public service shall help us serve our country even better,” read a tweet of the Trinamool Congress.
An erudite schiolar of cultural, historical and anthropological studies, Sircar has authored several books and articles, and research papers subjects for in noted national and international journals and newspapers. He has also delivered several talks on the subjects of history, religion, contemporary affairs . He has been conferred with the Biman Behari Memorial Award by The Asiatic Society of Kolkata (established in 1774)Biman Behari for his contribution to popularising the study of history and politics.
A product of the universities of Calcutta, Presidency, Cambridge and Sussex, Sircar and has two Masters Degrees in History and Sociology.
