New Delhi: Contrary to his frequent criticism of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a surprise mention of the 1st Prime Minister of India in his Independence Day speech.
Modi made a mention of Nehru while invoking the icons of India’s freedom struggle such as Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad in the beginning of his address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 75th Independence Day.
This was at variance with frequent criticism of Nehru by not only Modi but also other leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), blaming him for various historic ills dogging the country in the wake of its Independence.
Such criticism of the first Prime Minister has been giving rise to a number of jokes and memes on the social media, ridiculing the alleged tendency of the ruling party to blame Nehru for present day problems of the country.
