Gurgaon couple tortured 14-year-old maid; arrested

Representational purpose

Haryana police on Tuesday evening claimed to have rescued a 14-year-old domestic from her employer’s house in Gurugram where she suffered horrific abuse over the last few months.

The teenage victim, who hailed from Jharkhand, was rescued by a joint squad of Sakhi, a one-stop crisis center, with the help of police, officials said on Tuesday.

The couple has been arrested and a case registered under Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences or POCSO Act among other charges.

As per the official complaint filed by the Sakhi center in charge, Pinky Malik, the minor girl hails from Jharkhand’s Ranchi and she was initially hired via a placement agency.

The teenage was hired by the couple last year through a placement agency to take care of their three-month-old daughter, according to preliminary investigation. She was hired the girl five months ago.

The girl was found with wounds all over her body. She has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Tale of torture

During her stay with the couple, both the wife and the husband reportedly used to beat the girl every day. Initial investigation suggests the couple would starve and thrash the girl accusing her of “not working properly” and stealing food. According to reports, the couple assaulted the girl with sticks and blades, and she was also branded with hot tongs. The police revealed that she was also being sexually harassed. “She was not given food for days. The teen used to eat leftover food from the dustbin,” according to NDTV which quoted an official.

Social media post triggers the probe

A Gurugram-based NGO contacted police after a Twitter thread on the girl’s condition by an activist went viral yesterday. The photos shared by activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj show the child with multiple bruises and burn marks on her lips, forehead, arms, and cheeks.
