Zomato delivery boy says faced casteist slur from customer

A Zomato delivery boy was brutally thrashed by a customer when he went to deliver a meal on the evening of June 18 in the Ashiana Locality of Lucknow. Vinit Kumar Rawat alleged that he also faced casteist remarks.

The Uttar Pradesh Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused Abhay Singh and 10-12 unknown persons.

Rawat, who has been working for a food-delivery company for the past few years, alleged that he went to deliver an order (4129487231) to a customer who is a resident of sector H of Asiana.

When a customer came out to collect a meal, he enquired about the name and caste of the delivery boy. According to Rawat, when he got to know that he belonged to a Scheduled Caste, he used casteist slurs and spit tobacco on his face. The customer refused to take the order from the hands of an untouchable man. A delivery boy asked him to cancel the order if he did not want to collect it.

Rawat alleged some 10-12 people came out of the house and started beating him from blue to black. The victim also complained to the police that they took his bike.

Following the horrific attack, Rawat informed the police control room about the incident over the phone. The local cops reached the spot and rescued the victim and helped him get his bike from the accused’s possession.

According to the police, an FIR has been registered against the accused under the charges of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act and other sections 147 (the offence of rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police stated the probe and CCTV footage in the area were being scanned to trace the accused.
