New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Modi Government and the ruling BJP saying they were doing ”an ideological surgical strike on Gandhiji” to serve their political ends.
Today, the ruling party was evoking the name of Mahatama Gandhi in everything as it needed him, but it had never disowned Nathuram Godse, leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury remarked speaking on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in the House.
”Modi never said we want a secular India. You do ideological surgical strike on Gandhiji,” he said.
The Congress leader said the BJP people were quoting Gandhji on the issue of giving citizenship to Hindus, but were ignoring his remarks on embracing nationalist Muslims fleeing Pakistan.
He underlined that the preamble of the Constitution clearly says, ” We, the people of India…” and not ‘we the Hindus of India.’
Chowdhury accused the ruling party and the Government of trying to divide the country in the name of religion.
”You do not talk of jobs, industry , but you only talk of Pakistan, Musalman and Imran,” he said, adding that now the people of the country were now rising up against this narrative.
”There is a new alchemy of people fighting to save the Constitution. They are coming out in thousands, and you call them terrorist,” Chowdhury said refering to the countrywide protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) and the proposed NRC.
He also lambasted the Government over what he called contradictory statements being given by the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the law Minister over NRC. He said the ruling party wanted to create a communal divide over the protest, but the people of the country had foiled its attempt.
He underlined that the country’s Muslims had as much contribution in the freedom struggle as any other citizen. He sought to remind that Khan Abdul Ghafar Kahn spent 45 years of his 95-year life in jail fighting against the British. The slogan of ‘complete swaraj’ was first given by Urdu poet and freedom fighter Maulana Hasrat Mohami while ‘Jai Hind’ slogan was coined by Abid Hasan Safrani, an associate of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and ‘Quit India’ slogan was the gift of Yusuf Meher Ali, said the Congress leader.
The fact was that the RSS wanted to create a second Republic and that meant Hindu Rashtra, Chowdhury said.
The Congress leader also attacked the way the Government was conducting its diplomacy. He said that its policies had created a condition in which Kashmir was no more an internal matter but had been internationalised. With Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar listening to the debate in the House, Adhir Ranjan said the Minister was spending all diplomatic resources on the telling the world that Kashmir was an internal matter of India while the threat to the country from the Indian Ocean area, eastern and western flank were growing.
