CJI’s son empanelled as UP government’s lawyer in Supreme Court

In a significant development, it came to the fore that the Uttar Pradesh government appointed Chief Justice UU Lalit’s son, Shreeyash Lalit, as its senior panel lawyer in the Supreme Court. His appointment was notified on September 21, according to the news portal scroll.in.

Besides Shreeyash Lalit, the state government has also appointed three other lawyers as their representatives in the Supreme Court, according to The Wire.

Twitterati reacted sharply to the news even as many handlers left “open secret” messages over the news. While many social media posts raised questions over the appointment, some there is no wrong in it. One of the social media users wrote, “Nothing wrong as long as he does not appear before Benches where the CJI is sitting. And in any case, the CJI retires soon.” It was supported by another user, “I too think nothing is wrong. If we suspect he will get favour being CJI that can happen with any judge of SC.  Why only SC even HC courts judges could be suspected. Therefore we should keep faith in our judiciary.”

In May, the Allahabad High Court noted that Uttar Pradesh has more than 400 empanelled lawyers.

Shreeyash Lalit graduated from the Faculty of Law at Delhi University in 2017. He then did his masters from the University of Cambridge in 2018.

His father, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, took oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India on August 27. He succeeded Justice NV Ramana who had retired on August 26.

Justice UU Lalit’s tenure as chief justice is short as he is due to retire soon, on November 8.
