Former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma

Former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma whose offensive remarks against Prophet Muhammad triggered global outrage, has been granted a gun license, a Delhi Police official confirmed the development on Thursday. The woman made controversial remarks about the Prophet during a TV channel debate on the Gyanvapi Mosque issue in May 2022.

Notably, the Delhi Police also provided security cover to Nupur Sharma and her family members after she complained of death threats following her controversial remarks.

It is said at least two persons were killed for support her remarks on social media platforms. A tailor was killed in Udaipur ad chemist throat was slit I Amravati for backing her.

‘She fears for her life, so applied for a gun license’

Her lawyer told the Supreme Court that there was “an ever-increasing threat to her safety” and that it is “a real and genuine threat”. Nupur Sharma appealed to the media not to reveal her address as she had been receiving threats on social media. While the BJP leader withdrew her comment, she expressed fear for her life and applied for a gun license a week after the controversial comment against the last prophet of Islam. While she was suspended from the party, the opposition leaders and Muslim community were not satisfied, demanding legal action against her.

 SC rebukes the BJP leader

The Supreme Court in July took note of the threats directed at Sharma and protected her from arrest in the FIRs lodged against her. However, the top court observed that her “loose tongue” had put the entire country on fire,” and requiring her to make an instant public apology. The BJP leader had moved the top court to seek protection from arrest in multiple FIRs filed against her.

Global outrage

Her remarks triggered outrage across the religions, rights bodies, political parties, and Gulf countries, prompting the BJP to suspend her as a spokesperson. Qatar even summoned Indian ambassador and registered strong protest. The Gulf nation demanded apology from the Indian government.  The Indian government swiftly responded to his Qatar counterpart: “In line with our civilisational heritage and strong cultural traditions of unity in diversity, Government of India accords the highest respect to all religions. Strong action has already been taken against those who made the derogatory remarks.”
