Minor dies during pregnancy termination referral, teacher arrested in J&K’s Kishtwar

Jammu:A minor girl died during pregnancy termination referral on Friday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, as police arrested the school teacher allegedly involved in the heinous crime.

Shock, anger and grief overtook the remote Kishtwar district of Jammu division when a 14-year-old minor girl passed away during pregnancy termination referral.

The girl had been referred for medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) to Doda district from Kishtwar district, but reports said she passed away en route to Doda.

Police said the school teacher was responsible for the crime that ultimately led to the girl’s death.

“Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy, the girl’s death and other aspects of the case”, police said.

The girl belonged to the Khatroo area of Kishtwar. Police said the teacher was involved in the crime that resulted in the minor’s pregnancy.

More details were awaited as the police were probing the case.

Jammu and Kashmir registered 887 cases of crimes against children in 2024, with 444 cases chargesheeted and 537 cases pending investigation at the end of the year, according to data presented in the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon Session.

The union territory recorded a conviction rate of 9.4 per cent in 2024, while 2,517 cases involving crimes against children remained pending trial at the end of the year.

The data showed that the number of registered cases in Jammu and Kashmir has fluctuated in recent years. The union territory recorded 920 cases in 2022, followed by 910 cases in 2023 and 887 cases in 2024.

In 2022, a total of 456 cases were chargesheeted, 394 cases remained pending investigation at the end of the year, and the conviction rate stood at 11.7 per cent.

In 2023, the conviction rate was recorded at 8.7 per cent as chargesheets were filed in 413 cases, and 449 cases remained under investigation.
