New Delhi: Bangladesh is heading towards another upheaval as an unusual confrontation has developed between Army and the Interim government led by Mohammad Yunus as indicatedby events on Wednesday.
Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman had an indoor meeting with commanders at the army headquarter cantonment and reiterated the demand for holding general election within December 2025. Informed sources say that the General even said,” army wants to see elected government in place in January next year”.
The unusual meeting was convened by Army Chief following “heated exchanges” between the Army Chief with newly appointed National security advisor Khalilur Rahaman, who is believed to be a henchman of Chief executive Dr Yunus . The meeting was convened by Md Yunus at his office at Jamuna. Navy Chief Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan and Airforce Chief Air Marshal Hsan Mahmud Khan also attended the meeting.
NSA was promoting to create a” human corridor” from Bangladesh to trouble-torn Rakhine state of Myanmar where Arakan Army is engaged in a fierce battle with the Junta Government. In fact USA President Donalnd Trump administration wanted an access to Rakhione state.. The move was widely criticised by not only major political party BNP but also byJamiat Islami .BNP acting chairman Tareq Rahman , son of Chairman Khaleda Zia, in a televised address to party workers said interim government does not have mandate to decide on such crucial steps.”.
Facing widespread protest, later NSA clarified that no decision had been taken on the proposed corridor. The meeting convened by Prof Yunus was only to discuss about the corridor. However, Army ,Navy and Air Chief are believed to be opposed to the idea.
Nobel laureate Dr Yunus became head of the caretaker administration last August after protests spearheaded by students led to the dramatic collapse of the government of Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in self-exile in New Delhi.
In recent months, Yunus has told interlocutors from several countries, including India, that he intends holding elections by the yearend provided certain reforms are carried out. If the reforms require more time, he has suggested the elections could be held by mid-2026.
The army chief also questioned the handling of the economy and expressed concern at high-risk decisions made by unelected administrations, such as allowing the launch of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet services, sources said.
