Life Mission probe takes fresh turn as Swapna returns

Thiruvananthapuram: After a prolonged silence, Swapna Suresh is back at the centre of Kerala’s political discourse. Once the face of the sensational gold smuggling and Life Mission housing project controversies that rocked the Pinarayi Vijayan government’s first tenure, her re-emergence has now injected fresh political heat into the corruption probe.

Swapna has appeared before the Vigilance office in Thiruvananthapuram, where she was questioned for nearly three hours by a Special Investigation Team.

She is learnt to have submitted key documents and digital evidence while reiterating a series of serious allegations against former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his former Principal Secretary, M. Sivasankar.

Swapna was asked to appear before the Vigilance team in response to its summons.

Following her testimony, her statement is now being scrutinised alongside the evidence already collected, with investigators expected to widen the probe in the coming days.

The Vigilance Department is probing allegations that the Life Mission housing project at Wadakkanchery was used as a conduit for a multi-crore commission racket involving funds provided by the UAE-based Red Crescent for housing the poor.

Swapna has once again alleged that construction contracts were awarded after hefty kickbacks were paid and that the transactions took place with the knowledge of M. Sivasankar.

She has also repeated her allegation that then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his office were involved in key decisions connected with the project.

For Kerala, Swapna’s return marks the third phase of a political saga that has spanned nearly six years.

It was during the first Pinarayi Vijayan government (2016-2021) that her explosive disclosures dominated headlines, triggering one of the biggest political storms witnessed in the state.

Yet, despite relentless attacks from the Opposition, the controversies failed to prevent Vijayan from scripting history by leading the Left Democratic Front back to power for a second consecutive term in the 2021 Assembly elections.

During the LDF government’s second term (2021-2026), Swapna briefly resurfaced with fresh allegations, but the political impact gradually faded and the controversy lost momentum.

Her latest comeback, however, unfolds in an entirely different political landscape.

Kerala is now governed by the Congress-led United Democratic Front, and the Vigilance investigation is being conducted under the new administration.

That has added a fresh political dimension to the case and raised the stakes considerably.

The Vigilance team is expected to examine the fresh material submitted by Swapna before deciding its next course of action, including whether to summon more witnesses, re-question M. Sivasankar and other officials, or move the investigation closer to filing a chargesheet.

Sivasankar by now had two different sessions in jail, one while in service and the second one after his retirement.

Whether Swapna’s latest allegations will once again reshape Kerala’s political narrative or whether Pinarayi Vijayan will emerge unscathed as he did before, remains the question that is now gripping the state’s political circles.
