California adopts Diwali resolution, expresses ‘deepest respect’ for Indian Americans and Indian diaspora

Washington: California’s State Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising Diwali and expressing its “deepest respect” for Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora in the state and around the world.

House Resolution 137 recognises this year’s Diwali festival on November 8 and encourages Californians to participate in the celebrations. Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra introduced the measure on August 13.

The resolution was adopted after being considered by the Assembly Committee on Rules. It drew a broad group of co-authors from across the State Assembly.

The Hindu American Foundation announced the adoption in a social media post.

“California’s Diwali Resolution has officially been ADOPTED!” the organisation said.

It thanked Patel and Kalra “for their leadership in recognising the significance of Diwali and advancing this important resolution.”

“Special thanks to Asm. Patel’s office for reaching out to us for consultation on the bill language. We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute,” the foundation said.

The resolution describes Diwali as a festival of great significance to Indian Americans and South Asian Americans. It notes that Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains celebrate the festival annually across the United States and around the world.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, means “a row of lamps,” according to the resolution. It calls the festival one of the world’s oldest holidays and says it brings families, friends and communities together.

The document highlights generosity, unity, joy, appreciation and reflection as central elements of the celebration.

The resolution says the lamps represent “the defeat of darkness and the victory of light.”

It also recognises the festival as an important time for families to gather and participate in traditions that promote a sense of community.

Different Diwali traditions represent the triumph of good over evil and carry themes of overcoming struggles, embracing positivity and humility, and maintaining kindness despite personal challenges, the resolution says.

The measure notes that Diwali will be celebrated this year across the Indian American and South Asian American diaspora. For many communities, the festival also marks the beginning of a new year.

“For those who celebrate, Diwali is a time to commit to knowledge, growth, and happiness,” it says.

The Assembly said the festival also provides a time for reflection and underscores the importance of wisdom, kindness and transformation.
