Aligarh:Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) Vice Chancellor Professor Tariq Mansoor’s move to meet the agitating students on the campus on Thursday failed to cut much ice with the protesters who described his gesture as coming ”too late.”

”Don’t know what prompted him to come today after so many innocent students suffered because of his action,” the students said.

During the interaction with students, the VC accepted that the police entry was ”an aberration”.Prof Mansoor said the police should have no role in the working of the University and law and order is to be maintained by the University.

A statement from the University said that the VC sought to assure the students that the University Administration was fully committed to provide congenial atmosphere and security to the students and it has no issue if the students peacefully protest on any provision which they find objectionable.

Prof Mansoor urged students to cooperate with the visiting National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team and the fact finding committee headed by Justice V K Gupta (Former Chief Justice of the High Courts of Jharkand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand) set up by the University for a detailed investigation on what all transpired on the fateful night of December 15, in which a score of students were left injured in police action during a protest against CAA and NRC.

In his conversation with students, the Vice Chancellor emphasised that the University administration is providing all assistance to the NHRC team.

Expressing deep regrets, Prof Mansoor said, “I deeply regret that students suffered injuries and the inconvenience they faced when they were asked to vacate hostels.”

The Vice Chancellor also clarified that the University administration gave permission to the police only to bring the situation to normalcy and restore public order and that the police personnel were not supposed to enter any residential hostel.

However, the students sitting on Dharna at the Bab-e-Syed, the main gate of the university, said that today’s visit by the Vice Chancellor had no meaning for them as he had completely failed to provide any security to them and students would not have suffered if he had not called the police in.

Former president of the AMU students Union Faizul Hasan said the Vice Chancellor’s action had no other precedent, and his today’s visit to the dharna site was devoid of any sincerety.

He said,” We will continue our peaceful protest as the issues involved were the legal, constitutional, political and civil rights of minorities in this country. ”

Meanwhile, AMU teachers today took out a procession against CAA-NRC.

On condition of anonymity, a teacher said that all, including most of the teachers wanted this vice chancellor to go, but of course, they cannot come out openely with their demand.
