Birmingham: India opened its medal tally on day 2 of the Commonwealth Games 2022 at Birmingham, England. Till now, India has won two medals, one silver and one bronze each in weightlifting.
The 21-year-old Sanket Sargar won first medal at the Commonwealth Games in the men’s 55kg category. Sangar looked on course to win the gold but after two jerk attempts he lifted a total of 248kg (113kg/135kg) to finish second and win silver medal.
Another weightlifter Gururaj Poojary bagged a bronze medal for India in the men’s 61kg weight category with a total of 269kg. It is the second consecutive CWG medal for Gururaj. Previously, he won India’s first medal in 2018 Gold Coast, gives the country its second medal in 2022 Birmingham.
India is advancing rapidly in other games and hope for clinching a gold medal soon.
At Badminton, Indian shuttlers dished out another splendid show to outsmart Sri Lanka 5-0 in the second group-A match of the mixed team competition. While Indian women’s table tennis team, led by Manika Batra is continuing its winning streak as it outshined Guyana 3-0.
Indian boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin beats South Africa’s Amzolele Dyeyi in the men’s featherweight (54-57kg) category to advance to the round of 16. He won by a unanimous decision in Birmingham on Saturday. In the last edition of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, he had clinched bronze for India.
Star weightlifter and Olypics champion Mirabai Chanu will be also seen in action on the second day of the Commonwealth Games and she will be defending her CWG title. She may add a third medal at the Games. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain will also be in action later in the night (12 AM IST).
The Indian hockey team will be facing Wales in a tricky game in Group B, and will aim to continue on the momentum after a 5-0 win over Ghana on Friday. Meanwhile, Swimmer Srihari Nataraj will be taking part in the medal race after qualifying for the final last night by clocking 54.68s in 100m backstroke.
