New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sentenced fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya to four months in jail and also imposed a fine of ₹ 2,000 on him for a contempt of court case filed in 2017.
Mallya committed contempt by transferring $40 million to his children in violation of court orders passed in a case filed by a consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India, LiveLaw reported.
The transaction of 40 million dollars by Vijay Mallya to his children is “void and inoperable”, the Supreme Court said, ordering the recipients to return the amount with 8% interest to the recovery officer within four weeks, failing whi ch Vijay Mallya’s properties can be attached.
The apex Court said that Mallya did not show any remorse for his conduct nor did he appear before it during the sentence hearing. Adequate sentence must be imposed on him to uphold the majesty of law, the court said.
