London:UK’s Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned in a set back to the minority Theresa May government, local media reported today.
His resignation has dealt a blow to the hard-won consensus around May’s Chequers deal.
Davis’s resignation came as a surprise, as May had recently secured her Cabinet’s support for her Brexit plan. However, Brexiteer camp had described the plan as ”too soft.”
In his resignation letter to May, Davis said he would not be a ”reluctant conscript” to the plan which he said will not be ”returning control of our laws in any real sense.”
Davis took over as Brexit Secretary in 2016 and played a key role in negotiating Britian’s withdrawal from the European Union.
According to Guardian, ”Prime Minister May was facing a backlash from the pro-Brexuit wing of her party, with PMs warning they were prepared to trigger a leadership contest.
