New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind has forwarded an Election Commission (EC) letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding a complaint against Rajasthan Governor Kalyan for violation of model code of conduct, asking it to take “necessary action”.
Mr Singh, a former UP chief minister during whose tenure the Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, in 19992, had said that Modi’s re-election is necessary “for the sake of the country and society”. He had made this statement on camera at his hometown Aligarh.
The Opposition Congress had taken up the issue, seeking President’s intervention. It had demanded that the Governor should be dismissed as his office was supposed to politically neutral and moreover his praise of Modi had come during the election time.
President forwarded the letter to the Ministry after returning from an international visit, an official said.
It is the first time since Independence when a Governor has violated the model code of conduct by campaigning for any Prime Minister.
Singh was appointed governor after the BJP came to power in 2014. Eralier he had quit the party in 1999 but came back into it in 2004.
