Indian Air Force on Tuesday terminated its three officers from services after they were held responsible for the BrahMos missile misfiring incident on March 9, 2022, according to ANI. The missile had landed inside Pakistan.
An official statement said: “A BrahMos missile was accidentally fired on March 9 this year. A Court of Inquiry (Col), set up to establish the facts of the case, including fixing responsibility for the incident, found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile.”
Their services have been terminated by the Central Government with immediate effect, it said, adding that termination orders have been served upon the officers on Tuesday.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on March 15 stated that a high-level probe was ordered into the incident that involved the accidental launch of a missile into Pakistani territory.
It was said that during “routine maintenance and inspection,” a BrahMos missile was accidentally launched into the territory of Pakistan in the vicinity of Mian Channu town, travelling more than 120 kms west of the India-Pakistan border.
According to Pakistani military officials on March 10, the missile flew for 3 minutes and 46 seconds within Pakistani airspace. Pakistan military spokesman Major General Babar Iftikhar said, “On 9 March, at 6:43 pm, a high-speed flying object was picked up inside the Indian territory.” He had further added that it deviated, entered and then “fell in Pakistan territory, causing some damage to civilian installations, but no loss of life was reported.” – INDIA NEWS STREAM
