New Delhi: Delhi is going to get world class roads, and the national capital is to learn from the journeys of top global cities in street transformation and apply those lessons to improve the city’s streets.
Experts from the cities of London, New York, Seoul and Bogota will participate in a high-level virtual workshop to be held on Oct 5 on the topic of ‘Transforming Delhi’s Streets’.
The Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDC) in partnership with WRI India is organising this international workshop is to understand international best practices in street design and development. Dialogue and Development Commission Vice Chairperson Jasmine Shah said that the central idea of the workshop is to learn from the journeys of top global cities.
He said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has set an ambitious vision of redesigning and transforming all 100 feet wide roads in Delhi, over 540 km in length, according to European standards with the core goal of improving safety, accessibility and quality of life, and by achieving a shift towards sustainable mobility.
Amit Bhatt, Director of Integrated Urban Transport, WRI India said, “A well-designed street has a positive impact not only on their immediate environment but also improves air quality, reduces congestion and mitigates inequity. Delhi Government’s move towards transforming the streets of the national capital is an example of unprecedented scale and ambition”.
The beautification and redesigning of roads will involve bicycle lanes, large no. of plantations to curb pollution, selfie points, parklets and incorporation of artwork. The redevelopment efforts will promote improved air quality, reduce congestion and mitigate inequity.
