New Delhi: Several people, including former Delhi BJP spokesperson Ashwani Upadhya, have been taken into police custody for their hate speeches against Muslims at Delhi’s Jantara Mantar, barely a km from Parliament, against which a FIR had been filed by Indian Muslims For Progress and Reforms (IMPAR).
On August 8, some anti-social elements gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, reportedly without due permission, and made abusive religious comments against Muslims, and vociferously sloganeered, and made a video of the incident and circulated the same on social media, IMPAR mentioned in its complaint with Delhi Police.
IMPAR also wrote to National Commission on Minorities as well as Delhi Commission on Minorities, urging them to initiate needed action in this matter.
”Indian Muslims need not fear such empty words. IMPAR would fight against the forces that want to break the social fabric of the nation. Don’t be distracted and don’t get provoked. All such attempts would be dealt with appropriate legal actions.
”IMPAR has online registered FIR with the Cyber Cell of Delhi Police, demanding strict action under various sections of the IPC against these anti-social and anti-national forces and their immediate arrest. Such elements want to disturb the communal harmony and want to spread anarchy in the country,” the organisation said in a statement.
The issue was also taken up by Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind with Home Minister Amit Shah. Jamat President Maulana Mahmood A. Madani sent a letter to the Home Minister and Delhi Police Commissioner Shri Rakesh Asthana. “I would like to request you to kindly instruct concerned officers at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police to take stern actions against the culprits who are found involved in this. I am apprehensive about the situation being developed in Delhi, law and order of Delhi is being put on the risk by extremist groups once again and a situation like Delhi Riots 2020 may recur if such elements are not punished,” the letter had said.
According to media reporst, Upadhyay and four others had been taken into police custody. They were likely to be questioned over the anti-Muslim slogans .
The reports said Upadhyay had called for a march on Sunday to demand an end to ‘colonial-era laws’ by setting up a uniform civil code.
A video clip of the Jantar Mantar event showed participants shouting. “Hindustan mein rehna hoga jai shri ram kehna hoga (To stay in India, must say Jai Shri Ram)”.
