New Delhi: With the Supreme Court ordering mediation to resolve the Ayodhya dispute, veteran civil servant and Convener, Watan ki Fikr and President, Zakat Foundation of India Dr Syed Zafar Mahmood has said Muslims might agree to the construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya provided certain wrongs done to them were undone as suggested by the Sachchar Committee and the Rangnath Misra Commission.
” If Muslims are to give up their property rights in the Ayodhya case, they should have the right to Constitutional and social justice which has been denied to them in several matters and on several occasion,” Dr Mahmood told India News Stream on Friday.
He has floated a nine-point proposal which includes giving reservation to Muslims in the dalit category, or, in other words, making the definition of dalit ”religion-neutral”, and acceptance of the minority character of the Aligarh Muslim University, Jamia Millia Islamia and other educational institutions established by the minorities.
Another important demand is de-reserving the constituencies of Lok Sabha and state assemblies where the Scheduled Caste percentage is not the highest in the state, and, instead, reserving those constituencies where SC percentage is the highest, as recommended by Justice Sachar , which would end the widespread violation of section 9(1)(c) of the Delimitation Act.
The other major point of his proposal is that if any person accused of terror activity is, after several years of multi-dimensional sufferance, is exonerated by the court as innocent, he or she should be given Rs fifty lakh as compensation by the government. Later on, this money should be at least partly deducted from the salary/pension/provident fund/retirement benefits of the officer(s) who wrongly implicated him.
Besides, the demands also include filling the posts of CEO of state waqf boards through a Indian Waqf Service as recommended by the Justice Sachar Committee, accepting RBI proposal of allowing the banks to have a window for interest less banking, giving proportionate share to Muslims in central and state council of ministers and in all nominated posts and appointments under the state & central governments, and appointing an Equal Opportunity Commission at the centre and in the states as recommended by Justice Sachar Committee.
