Need action, not words on Kashmir: Pakistan envoy to UN

Sep 9, 2019
New York: Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN)Maleeha Lodhi has called for action, and not just words, on the part of the United Nations on the issue of Kashmir.

In an interview to American TV Consortium News here, Lodhi highlighted the situation in the Kashmir Valley where she said people have been suffering under a lockdown for over a month.

“We need action. We just don’t need words. We need action,” she emphasised.

“There are already tensions which are at a peak between India and Pakistan, and the situation can snowball into a much bigger crisis,” the Pakistani envoy said.

Lodhi pushed for the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions that have assured the right of self-determination to the Kashmiri people to decide their future. She urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take steps to prevent a bigger crisis in South Asia.

About the possibility of a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan, she said that Islamabad does not wish to see any kind of conflict. Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state, she added.

Lodhi also said that India’s August 5 move to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir seemed to be right out of the Israeli playbook, and was similar to the way the Israelis have treated the people of Palestine. IANS
