Bengaluru: Celebrated actor, playwright and filmmaker Girish Karnad passed away at 81 today after a long illness.
The end caame at a hospital in Bengaluru at 6.30 am, according to his family.
Paying tribute to the the award-winning litterateur and also as a fearless activist, writer
Ramachandra Guha said “Playwright, actor, institution-builder and patriot, Girish Karnad was a
colossus. It was a privilege to have known him, a far greater privilege to have seen his plays and
read his work. I wrote this tribute to him on his 80th birthday.”
Karnad was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992.
Veteran actor Kamal Haasan: “Girish Karnad, His scripts both awe and inspire me. He has left behind
many inspired fans who are writers. Their works perhaps will make his loss partly bearable.”
The Karnataka has declared a holiday for schools, colleges and government offices in the state on
Monday and a three-day mourning till Wednesday, as a mark of respect to Jnanpith awardee, multi-
lingual actor and noted writer Girish Karnad, who died here earlier in the day, an official said.
“The state government has declared holiday for all schools, colleges and offices for the day (Monday)
and three-day mourning till June 12 as a mark of respect to Karnad,” the official of the Chief
Minister’s Office told IANS.
